Storyboard the presentation

Storyboard the presentation

Process

Once you’ve completed the script, you’re ready to storyboard the presentation. This involves breaking the script down into separate pages, one page in the storyboard for each slide in the presentation, each with its own image and text.

First, open your script document. It should be a series of headers and paragraphs at this point.

Illustration representing the script document

Go through your script document and start a new page for each section of the presentation where you want to start a new slide. Each top-level bullet point from your outline typically ends up as its own slide in the presentation, or can be broken out to multiple slides if there is a lot of content in that section.

Adding page breaks to the script document

Insert an image for each slide at the top of that page. This image could be the actual artwork for the slide, or something less polished that just acts as a placeholder for that slide’s image for the moment. Then place the text for that slide beneath the image.

Adding an image to each page in the script document

Try to keep the slide image and the text for the slide on the same page. That way, the page number in the document matches the slide number in the presentation. This will be useful in later steps of the process. You can shrink the slide image to make more room if needed. If you’re still finding it hard to keep the slide’s image and text all on one page, you may want to consider breaking into into multiple smaller slide pages.

Next, insert page numbers into the script document.

Inserting page numbers into the script document

When you’re done, you’ll have a document that has one page dedicated to each slide, showing the slide image (or a placeholder for it) and the text for the slide, on each page. Each page number in the document matches the corresponding slide number in the presentation. Using this format for the script will be helpful as we move forward through the process.

Tools

You can use any text editor for this step, but it can be helpful to use an editor that allows you to insert images, since we’ll do that in a subsequent step.

Both Google Docs and Microsoft Word are good options for storyboarding your presentation.
